Arrowroot is a white powder extracted from the root of a West Indian plant, Marantha arundinacea. It looks and feels like cornstarch, and is an excellent thickening agent for cooking and baking. It thickens at a lower temperature than flour or cornstarch and 1 teaspoon of arrowroot can be substituted for 1 tablespoon of flour. Often hard to find, even in health food stores that seem well-stocked.

The only starch product with a calcium ash, Arrowroot is a nutritious food that assists in the body's maintenance of acid and alkaline balance.

Arrowroot only thrives on tidal flats where the sea minerals are available. Its known health-building properties may be due to trace minerals from the sea, as well as from the calcium it gets from the sea water. Arrowroot is not a refined product; it is simply the dried and powdered root.

The 115 Year Old Man
In 1979, a British journalist made a great discovery when he was given the unusual assignment of interviewing one of the oldest documented living people in the world, Mr. Shigechiyo Izumi. Mr. Izumi was a sprightly 115 year old man in amazingly good health who lived on an island off the coast of Japan. He appeared to be active and alert, as spry as a healthy 70 year old. The journalist noticed most of the other inhabitants on the island were also in great health and seldom died before age 95! So intriguing were these people that researchers came to investigate.

Researchers found the water the islanders drank was uniquely different. It contained unique, ionized minerals leached from coral on which the island was built. Camu-camu is a fruit that comes from a bush which grows close to the river banks in the Amazonian rain forest of South America. The camu-camu fruit has a purplish red skin with a yellow pulp. When dried, the pulp becomes a beautiful pink in color. Traditionally made into a juice by people of the rainforest to help maintain their health, camu-camu has more Vitamin C than any other known botanical. The highest quality camu-camu contains 30 to 60 times more Vitamin C than an orange, plus bioflavanoids, and a combination of phytonutrients unique to the camu-camu fruit. Unfortunately, most of the commercially prepared camu-camu has a negligible amount of Vitamin C, which has led to a lack of appreciation of this most potent fruit. Camu-camu also contains bioflavanoids, the amino acids serine, valine, and leucine, as well as small amounts of thiamine, riboflavin and niacin.

There is so much to say about Maca! The fact that one of the many names for it is "Peruvian Ginseng" gives a clue about its nature. Eaten as a traditional food for thousands of years, the Maca root has been used by traditional peoples to enhance libido, energy, as well as numerous therapeutic uses.

We have a lot of respect for Maca because it does something that is fairly rare - it supports the regeneration and optimal functioning of the endocrine system, including the pancreas, thyroid, adrenals, ovaries, and testes. It is an adaptogen, meaning that it helps the body deal with stress. Because endocrine gland balance and immune system function are so interrelated, it often notably enhances immune system functioning.

The Maca root is a hardy cruciferous vegetable cultivated in an inhospitable region of the Andean Mountains at altitudes from approximately 12,500-14,500 feet. The part of the plant used for medicinal purposes is the root. Maca is rich in essential minerals, especially selenium, calcium, magnesium, and iron, and includes fatty acids including linolenic, palmitic and oleic acids, and polysaccharides.

Q. Can foods that contain phytoestrogens such as soy, beans and pomegranates be eaten when also taking Royal Maca?

Neither can bioidentical hormones, regular HRT, estrogenic vaginal suppositories or patches, nor any phytoestrogenic herbs such as black cohosh, mother wort, red clover, licorice root, etc.
