Lactose, or milk sugar, is derived from whey and like whey, it is useful in assisting in the growth of beneficial bacteria such as Lactobacillus acidophilus in the G.I. tract. Included in Nourishing Traditions baby formulas, lactose is an essential addition to cow's milk as mother's milk is richer in lactose than cow's milk.

Lactose is about 20% as sweet as sugar and is a great milk additive for children. It is an easily dissolving powder.

Q. Is it organic?
A. This yeast is not certified organic. Organic nutritional yeast is available, however we decided not to carry it as it contains gluten (from added wheat), excessive amounts of iron and only trace amounts of B vitamins.

Q. What is special about this yeast?
A. This yeast is grown on molasses, not soy. Molasses is a good source of naturally occurring Vitamin B6, Potassium, Magnesium and Manganese. Frontier yeast is processed in such a way so as not to produce MSG by-products. The yeast is simply dried and rolled into tiny flakes.

Q. Why is maltodextrin added?
A. The NOW company maintains that to retard spoilage of the acerola cherries during drying, it needs to add a bit of corn-based maltodextrin. It is not added as a sweetener and is a very small amount.
